Fanon's masterwork is a classic alongside Edward Said's Orientalism or The Autobiography of Malcolm X, and it is now available in a new translation that updates its language for a new generation of readers. The Wretched of the Earth is a brilliant analysis of the psychology of the colonized and their path to liberation. Bearing singular insight into the rage and frustration of colonized peoples, and the role of violence in effecting historical change, the book incisively attacks the twin perils of postindependence colonial politics: the disenfranchisement of the masses by the elites on the one hand, and intertribal and interfaith animosities on the other. Fanon's analysis, a veritable handbook of social reorganization for leaders of emerging nations, has been reflected all too clearly in the corruption and violence that has plagued present-day Africa. The Wretched of the Earth has had a major impact on civil rights, anticolonialism, and black consciousness movements around the world.

BK

eng

Fanon, Frantz, 1925-1961

<format>BK</format>

<image_url/>

The Padilla Affair

A startling documentary about the poet Heberto Padilla that opens a window into the past and offers insights into Cuba's current crisis.

VIDEO_ONLINE

spa

<format>VIDEO_ONLINE</format>

<image_url/>

The Wretched of the Earth

Frantz Fanon's seminal work on the trauma of colonization, "The Wretched of the Earth" made him the leading anti-colonialist thinker of the twentieth century. This "Penguin Modern Classics" edition is translated from the French by Constance Farrington, with an introduction by Jean-Paul Sartre. Written at the height of the Algerian war for independence from French colonial rule and first published in 1961, Frantz Fanon's classic text has provided inspiration for anti-colonial movements ever since, analysing the role of class, race, national culture and violence in the struggle for freedom. With power and anger, Fanon makes clear the economic and psychological degradation inflicted by imperialism. It was Fanon, himself a psychotherapist, who exposed the connection between colonial war and mental disease, who showed how the fight for freedom must be combined with building a national culture, and who showed the way ahead, through revolutionary violence, to socialism. Many of the great calls to arms from the era of decolonization are now of purely historical interest, yet this passionate analysis of the relations between the great powers and the 'Third World' is just as illuminating about the world we live in today. Frantz Fanon (1925-61) was a Martinique-born French author essayist, psychoanalyst, and revolutionary. Fanon was a supporter of the Algerian struggle for independence from French rule, and became a member of the Algerian National Liberation Front. He was perhaps the preeminent thinker of the 20th century on the issue of decolonization and the psychopathology of colonization. His works have inspired anti-colonial liberation movements for more than four decades.

BK

eng

Fanon, Frantz, 1925-1961

<format>BK</format>

<image_url/>

Adieux

BK

eng

Beauvoir, Simone de, 1908-1986

<format>BK</format>
A Farewell to Sartre

<image_url/>

Critique of Dialectical Reason

At the height of the Algerian war, Jean-Paul Sartre embarked on a fundamental reappraisal of his philosophical and political thought. The result was the Critique of Dialectical Reason, an intellectual masterpiece of the twentieth century, now republished with a major original introduction by Fredric Jameson. In it, Sartre set out the basic categories for the renovated theory of history that he believed was necessary for post-war Marxism. Sartre's formal aim was to establish the dialectical intelligibility of history itself, as what he called 'a totalisation without a totaliser'. But, at the same time, his substantive concern was the structure of class struggle and the fate of mass movements of popular revolt, from the French Revolution at the end of the eighteenth century to the Russian and Chinese revolutions in the twentieth: their ascent, stabilisation, petrification and decline, in a world still overwhelmingly dominated by scarcity.

BK

eng

Sartre, Jean-Paul, 1905-1980

<format>BK</format>
Volume 1, Theory of Practical Ensembles

<image_url/>

Truth and Existence

BK

eng

Sartre, Jean-Paul, 1905-1980

<format>BK</format>

<image_url/>

Nausea

In this novel, Antoine Roquentin, an introspective historian, records the disturbing shifts in his perceptions and his struggle to restore meaning to life in a continuing present and without lies. A brilliant and radical account of the human condition, Being and Nothingness explores what gives our lives significance. In a new, more accessible translation, this foundational text argues that we alone create our values and our existence is characterized by freedom and the inescapability of choice. Far from being an internal, passive container for our thoughts and experiences, human consciousness is constantly projecting itself to the outside world and imbuing it with meaning. The central work by one of the world's most influential thinkers, it altered the course of Western philosophy. Its revolutionary approach challenged all previous assumptions about the individual's relationship with the world. Known as "the Bible of existentialism", its impact on culture and literature was immediate and was felt worldwide, from Samuel Beckett's drama of the absurd to the soul-searching cries of the Beat poets. Being and Nothingness is one of those rare books whose influence has affected the mindset of subsequent generations.
