Set against the backdrop of American history, her tale encompasses the creation of Indian Territory, the making of Oklahoma, and the establishment of black towns and oil-rich boomtowns.
Rector acquired her fortune at the age of eleven. This is both her story and that of children just like her: one filled with ups and downs amid bizarre goings-on and crimes perpetrated by greedy and corrupt adults. From a trove of primary documents, including court and census records and interviews with family members, author Tonya Bolden painstakingly pieces together the events of Sarah's life and the lives of those around her.
The book includes a glossary, a bibliography, and an index.
It’s easy to apply Scandi design principles to our own homes, with no real purpose or understanding of why we’re doing what we’re doing, and then wonder why our homes don’t quite look like the Scandi homes of Instagram, or why we’re not getting that warm, cosy feeling everyone talks about. Focusing on the practices of artists, craftspeople, and designers, and their re-evaluation of unwanted, pre-used, and discarded materials, this volume presents new research on material culture from China, one of the world's leading waste-receiving and waste-producing countries, in a global context. Through the lens of an ecocritical history of art, craft, and design, it studies creative engagements with matter related to aspects of (dis)connectivity, considering how the meanings and values attributed to objects and raw materials can change radically as they travel across historical and cultural divides.
"A captivating account of the cycles of use, waste and reinvention that animate modern and contemporary China. The authors capture the dexterity of artists and craftspeople who imagine, picture, signify, fashion and terraform the aesthetic dimension. With vivid detail, the chapters highlight the ingenuity of Chinese material culture in the complexity of its global circulation and planetary transformation. In this history of African American Protestantism and American politics at the end of the Civil War, Nicole Myers Turner challenges the idea of black churches as having always been politically engaged. Using local archives, church and convention minutes, and innovative Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping, Turner reveals how freedpeople in Virginia adapted strategies for pursuing the freedom of their souls to worship as they saw fit—and to participate in society completely in the evolving landscape of emancipation.
Freedpeople, for both evangelical and electoral reasons, were well aware of the significance of the physical territory they occupied, and they sought to organize the geographies that they could in favor of their religious and political agendas at the outset of Reconstruction. As emancipation included opportunities to purchase properties, establish black families, and reconfigure gender roles, the ministry became predominantly male, a development that affected not only discourses around family life but also the political project of crafting, defining, and teaching freedom. After freedmen obtained the right to vote, an array of black-controlled institutions increasingly became centers for political organizing on the basis of networks that mirrored those established earlier by church associations.
We are proud to announce that this book will also be published as an enhanced open-access e-book on a companion website hosted by Fulcrum, an innovative publishing platform launched by Michigan Publishing at the University of Michigan Library. Aspects of time, seasons and chronology play an important role when exploring textiles and clothes in antiquity. The time of textiles appears highly gendered, embodied, tangible, and concrete. Textiles follow their own timeframes and paces, and they connect us to the past in an intimate and diachronic way because we still wear woven fabrics, as people did in antiquity.

Textiles themselves are ephemeral and rarely survive in archaeological contexts. But when they do, they can show evidence of a long life.

This book is about the time of textiles in ancient Greece: how time was articulated and conceived via clothing and textile production and how clothes conveyed time, seasons, ages, lifetimes and chronological periods. Textiles moreover symbolized eternity and destiny, as the spinning goddesses of fate called Moirai by the ancient Greeks. These goddesses spin, measure and cut the thread of a person's life.

The book invites university students in history, archaeology and classics, as well as interested readers, craft communities and Humanities scholars to reflect on diverse dimensions of time in ancient Greece through the study of textiles and clothes.

EBOOK

eng

Nosch, Marie-Louise Bech

<format>EBOOK</format>

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9783112223758/MC.GIF&client=midarkansas&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

The Exceptional North

From 18th-century accounts to contemporary discourse, this book critically examines the notion of 'Nordic exceptionalism'. Through careful historical analysis, it explores how external observers have perceived and portrayed Nordic societies, questioning the roots and evolution of this influential concept within social as well as art-historical debates. Our main research question is: Were ideas of exceptionalism already present in early discussions and debates about the Nordic countries?

While the perception of Nordic exceptionalism has often been idealised, the book shows that it has never been devoid of cultural criticism. Nevertheless, there remains a consistent acknowledgement that the Nordic countries stand out as a distinct cultural unit shaped by a distinctive cultural and political trajectory. The book fills a gap in existing critical literature by analysing historical perspectives. Furthermore, it explores how the Nordic countries have crafted their self-representation in response to these external views.

Each chapter is thoughtfully curated to balance scholarly rigour with accessibility, making it suitable for students and scholars in the interdisciplinary fields of history, cultural studies, art- and literary history, and transnational research.

EBOOK

eng

<format>EBOOK</format>
Past and Present Perspectives on Nordicness

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9783112205426/MC.GIF&client=midarkansas&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Your Knitted Christmas

Enjoy Your Knitted Christmas today!
