All stories, Aristotle said, have a beginning, a middle, and an end, but most ends are relative, the terminus of this chain of acts or that. But what of the end that terminates all human action as we know it, the end of time itself, the Second Coming? Since this novel appeared in 1906, many others have been devoted to nuclear disaster, destructive comets, and other hair-raising possibilities. What sets Benson's story apart and makes it as readable today as when it was written is the Catholic and biblical context that provides the ultimate meaning"--Provided by publisher.

BK

eng

Benson, Robert Hugh, 1871-1914

<format>BK</format>

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781587314711/MC.GIF&client=hennp&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Lord of the World

EBOOK

eng

Benson, Robert Hugh, 1871-1914

<format>EBOOK</format>

<image_url/>

Lord of A Visible World

BK

eng

Lovecraft, H. The best fly anglers in the world--Lefty Kreh, Stu Apte, Ted Williams, Tom Evans, Billy Pate and others--all gathered together to chase the same Holy Grail--the world record for the world's most glamorous and sought-after fly rod species, the tarpon. The anglers would meet each morning for breakfast. They would compete out on the water during the day, eat dinner together at night, socialize and party. Some harder than others. The world record fell nearly every year. But records weren't the only things that were broken. Hooks, lines, rods, reels, hearts and marriages didn't survive, either. The egos involved made the atmosphere electric. The difficulty of the quest made it legitimate. The drugs and romantic entanglements that were swept in with the tide would finally make it all veer out of control. It was a confluence of people and place that had never happened before in the world of fishing and will never happen again. It was a collision of the top anglers and the top species of fish which would lead to smashed lives for nearly all involved, man and fish alike. In Lords of the Fly, Burke, an obsessed tarpon fly angler himself, delves into this incredible moment. He examines the growing popularity of the tarpon, an amazing fish that has been around for 50 million years, can live to 80 years old and can grow to 300 pounds in weight. It is a massive, leaping, bullet train of a fish. When hooked in shallow water, it produces "immediate unreality," as the late poet and tarpon obsessive, Richard Brautigan, once described it. Burke also chronicles the heartbreaking destruction that exists as a result brought on by greed, environmental degradation and the shenanigans of a notorious Miami gangster--and how all of it has shaped our contemporary fishery. Filled with larger-than-life characters and vivid prose, Lords of the Fly is not only a must read for anglers of all stripes, but also for those interested in the desperate yearning of the human condition.

BK

eng

Burke, Monte

<format>BK</format>
Madness, Obsession and the Hunt for the World-record Tarpon

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781643135588/MC.GIF&client=hennp&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Lords of Finance

With penetrating insights for today, this vital history of the world economic collapse of the late 1920s offers unforgettable portraits of four men -- Montagu Norman, Amile Moreau, Hjalmar Schacht, and Benjamin Strong -- whose personal and professional actions as heads of their respective central banks changed the course of the twentieth century.

BK

eng

Ahamed, Liaquat

<format>BK</format>
The Bankers Who Broke the World

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781594201820/MC.GIF&client=hennp&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Lords of Finance

With penetrating insights for today, this vital history of the world economic collapse of the late 1920s offers unforgettable portraits of four men--Montagu Norman, Amile Moreau, Hjalmar Schacht, and Benjamin Strong--whose personal and professional actions as heads of their respective central banks changed the course of the twentieth century.

EBOOK

eng

Ahamed, Liaquat

<format>EBOOK</format>
The Bankers Who Broke the World

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781440697920/MC.GIF&client=hennp&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Middle-Earth From Script to Screen

Describes how The Lord of the Rings film trilogy and The Hobbit film trilogy were brought to life on the screen, looking at the technology, people, and creative processes involved in their creation.

BK

eng

Falconer, Daniel

<format>BK</format>
Building the World of The Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9780062486141/MC.GIF&client=hennp&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

El Chapo

"This is the true story of how El Chapo built the world's wealthiest and most powerful drug-trafficking operation, based on months' worth of trial testimony and dozens of interviews with cartel gunmen, Mexican journalists and political figures, Chapo's family members, and the DEA agents who brought him down. The letters cover the time span from when Staff Sergeant Lord entered boot camp in May 1943 to when he completed his service in January 1946. The collection contains two series. Letters Home from Harry Holmes Lord, Jr. : Letters Home consists of the almost-daily handwritten letters Harry sent to his parents. It also includes letters Harry sent to his siblings, his twin, Edith (Grace Edith MacMath, nee Lord) and his younger brother Charles William Lord. The letters contain a large amount of detail regarding the everyday life of a Marine, including what he ate, how he trained, camp life, current events, his duties, his role in the service and his experience of several deadly training accidents. He also describes his acceptance into the Marine Air Corps division in June 1944, his assignment to Marine Bombing Squadron 612, and his time on Okinawa, Japan. Letters to Harry Holmes Lord, Jr. : Letters to Harry includes carbon copies of the typed letters Harry's mother sent to him in reply. These letters cover personal family events as well as mention of national events and the effects of war, such as rationing. The folder dated October 1945 contains many letters that were returned to the family unopened.
