What the Germans didn't know was that they had just attacked their allies: locked below decks on the British ship were nearly 1,800 Italian prisoners of war. When the Germans realized their mistake, they made the unprecedented decision to rescue all survivors regardless of their nationality, attempting to declare the waters a neutral zone. But when an American bomber flew over the humanitarian effort, he was ordered to drop bombs, contributing to the deaths of many Italian POWs and British civilians in the process. On October 23, 2012, with Superstorm Sandy fast approaching, Captain Robin Walbridge made the fateful decision to sail the HMS Bounty from New London, Connecticut to St. Petersburg, Florida, believing the wooden ship, a replica of the original, famous Bounty, would fare better at sea than at port. He told the crew that anyone who did not want to come on the voyage could leave the ship and there would be no hard feelings. No one took the captain up on his offer, and this decision would have fatal consequences. Four days into the voyage, Superstorm Sandy made an almost direct hit on the Bounty-sending the crew tumbling into the ocean filled with crashing thirty foot waves. Some were swept far from the ship, others found themselves tangled in the rigging, while others were trapped below the surface by the masts and spreaders. What ensued was one of the most complex, dangerous, and massive Coast Guard rescue missions in history. His discovery prompts him to rush back to his village and alert his family and the respected sachem Massasoit. Intrigued, the sachem sends Ochala and his father to discreetly observe the Pilgrims from the forest's safety, seeking to understand these strangers.
Ochala and the Pilgrims places young Ochala at the forefront of key historical events that unfolded between the Pilgrims and his tribe. The story takes a significant turn when Ochala's actions profoundly impact his life and those around him, following the disappearance of a Pilgrim girl in the woods - an event inspired by true history.
The book vividly portrays the Wampanoag way of life, from their skilled woodcraft and agricultural practices to hunting methods, tribal customs, and even their language. It offers insights into how the Wampanoags lived in harmony with nature, in stark contrast to the Pilgrims' initial attempts to settle in Plymouth. The first Thanksgiving is featured near the end of the book.
Featuring historical figures such as Massasoit, Squanto, Samoset, and William Bradford, Ochala and the Pilgrims delves into themes of friendship, jealousy, decision-making, and patience.
Authored by Michael Tougias, an esteemed expert on this historical era, this meticulously researched tale provides young readers with a unique, enlightening perspective on the Pilgrims' arrival at Plymouth. A lobsterman goes missing while fishing off the island, and there are signs of foul play. Then, just a day later, a local sailor's boat is found adrift, minus the missing sailor. The three children become obsessed with the mystery, and begin an investigation that leads them down a path of adventure.

While none of the islanders know what happened to the missing fisherman, the reader does. He was snatched out of his boat by the claws of a giant seven-foot-long lobster.

Assisted by a biologist and a crusty old lobsterman, Easterly slowly unravels what happened, but is also thwarted at every turn by Mayor Ruth Snackle, who wants to keep a lid on the story so that it doesn't affect the all-important tourism business.

Meanwhile, Easterly is getting more than her fair share of criticism from folks all over the island for starting the hysteria about a "phony monster lobster." People think it's bad enough that two islanders are missing without a few kids interfering with both the tragedy and the investigation. This only makes Easterly, Kristin and Brian persevere and take more risks to prove their theory, and those risks eventually bring them face to face with Claws.

EBOOK

eng

Tougias, Michael J.

<format>EBOOK</format>

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781953910561/MC.GIF&client=jecop&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

The Finest Hours (Chapter Book)

On the night of February 18th, 1952, during one of the worst winter storms that New England has even seen, two oil tankers off the shore of Cape Cod are torn in half by the force of the seas. Tougias, the author of the New York Times bestseller The Finest Hours.

On May 19, 1942, during WWII, a U-boat in the Gulf of Mexico stalked its prey fifty miles from New Orleans. The submarine set its sights on the freighter Heredia. Most onboard were merchant seamen, but there were also civilians, including the Downs family: Ray and Ina, and their two children. Fast asleep in their berths, the Downs family had no idea that two torpedoes were heading their way. When the ship exploded, chaos ensued-and each family member had to find their own path to survival.

This inspiring historical narrative tells the story of the Downs family as they struggle against sharks, hypothermia, blinding oil, drowning, and dehydration in their effort to survive the aftermath of this deadly attack off the American coast.

Captained by twenty nine-year-old Iron Cross and King's Cross recipient Erich Wurdemann, the submarine set its sights on the freighter Heredia with sixty-two souls on board. Most aboard were merchant seamen, but there were also a handful of civilians, including the Downs family: Ray and Ina, and their two children, eight-year-old Sonny and eleven-year-old Lucille. Fast asleep in their berths, the Downs family had no idea that two torpedoes were heading their way. When the ship exploded, chaos ensued-and each family member had to find their own path to survival. WHEN MAN IS THE PREY is a one-of-a-kind collection of real-life encounters between man and beast that explores the uneasy relationship that humanity has with its native habitat. On Tuesday, October 24, 2012, Captain Robin Walbridge made the fateful decision to sail the HMS Bounty from New London, Connecticut, to St. Petersburg, Florida. Walbridge was well aware that a hurricane was forecast to come up the Eastern seaboard. He explained to his crew of fifteen that the ship would fare better at sea than at port, and that he thought he could sail "around the hurricane." He told the crew that anyone who did not want to come on the voyage could leave the ship and there would be no hard feelings. No one took the captain up on his offer. Four days into the voyage, superstorm Sandy made an almost direct hit on the Bounty. The vessel's pumps could not keep up with the incoming water and a few hours later, in the dark of night, the ship overturned, sending the crew tumbling into the ocean filled with crashing thirty-foot waves. The Coast Guard launched one of most complex and massive rescues in its history, flying two Jayhawk helicopter crews into the hurricane and lowering rescue swimmers into the raging ocean again and again despite the dangers. Ultimately fourteen crew members were rescued; tragically, two members did not survive. Dripping with suspense and vivid high-stakes drama, Rescue of the Bounty is an unforgettable tale about the brutality of nature and the human will to survive"-- Provided by publisher.

BK

eng

Tougias, Michael J.

<format>BK</format>
Disaster and Survival in Superstorm Sandy

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781476746630/MC.GIF&client=jecop&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

In Deep Water

The terrifying true story of a fight for survival for 28 hours in shark-infested waters.
October, 8, 2022.
Three friends are fishing for red snapper when their boat, tied to an oil rig, begins taking on water and sinks 15 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico. ABOUT THE PROGRAM: King Philip's War, took place between June 1675 and August 1676 between the colonists of the Massachusetts Bay Colonies of New England and the Native American, Wampanoag Tribe in what is considered the bloodiest war per capita in this country's history. King Philip was the name given to Metacom, the great chief of the Wampanoag Tribe. He was the son of Massasoit, the chief who made contact with the Puritans when they settled at the Massachusetts Bay colony of Plymouth. By 1675, friction between the Wampanoag Tribe of Southeastern New England and the English colonists had reached the boiling point. The increasing appetite for land by the growing population of colonists was usurping Native American territory. On June 20, Metacom, ordered an attack on the settlement at Swansea, Massachusetts, precipitating a war that destroyed his tribe and nearly bankrupted the Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay colonies. On August 12, 1676, Colonial soldiers under Benjamin Church surprised King Philip and his band at Mount Hope, where Philip was killed by the Pocasset, Alderman, with a bullet through the heart. On the orders of Church, King Philip's body was drawn and quartered and his head sent to Plymouth where it remained on display for 25 years. When the war ended with the death of Philip, 3000 Native Americans and 800 English had been killed, a staggering mortality given the population of that time. The Wampanoag tribe was devastated, with most of its members either killed or sold into slavery, including the wife and son of Philip. The Massachusetts Bay Colonies were nearly bankrupt. Native Americans and historians of the period believe this war was one of the most significant seminal events in American history. STUDENTS WILL LEARN: Who was King Philip? From which country had the New England colonists arrived? What was the primary cause of the war? How did the Native American concept of land differ from that of the colonists? How did the Native American style of fighting differ from that of the Colonists in the early stages of the war? When and where was Philip killed? What were the three main reasons why the Wampanoags lost the war? What were two significant consequences of the war? ABOUT THE NARRATORS: Eric Schultz and Michael Tougias are best-selling authors of, King Philip's War: The History & Legacy of America's Forgotten Conflict. Both authors provide narration and historical commentary throughout the program. Also featured are present day Wampanoag historians including Russell Peters, former head of the Wampanoag Council, Ella Sekatau, Narragansett historian, Linda Coombs and Nancy Eldridge, Wampanoag historians, and Richard Pickering, historian formerly of the Plimoth Plantation. Filmed live at Plimoth Plantation and other locations around New England. Includes informative maps illustrating battle sites and historical markers.

VIDEO_ONLINE

eng

<format>VIDEO_ONLINE</format>

<image_url/>

Above & Beyond

"From the authors of the bestselling The Finest Hours comes the riveting, deeply human story of President John F. Kennedy and two U-2 pilots, Rudy Anderson and Chuck Maultsby, who risked their lives to save America during the Cuban Missile Crisis. During the ominous two weeks of the Cold War's terrifying peak, two things saved humanity: the strategic wisdom of John F. Kennedy and the U-2 aerial spy program. On October 27, 1962, Kennedy, strained from back pain, sleeplessness, and days of impossible tension, was briefed about a missing spy plane. Its pilot, Chuck Maultsby, was on a surveillance mission over the North Pole, but had become disoriented and steered his plane into Soviet airspace. If detected, its presence there could be considered an act of war. As the president and his advisers wrestled with this information, more bad news came: another U-2 had gone missing, this one belonging to Rudy Anderson. His mission: to photograph missile sites over Cuba. For the president, any wrong move could turn the Cold War nuclear. Above and Beyond is the intimate, gripping account of the lives of these three war heroes, brought together on a day that changed history"--provided by publisher.

BK

eng

Sherman, Casey

<format>BK</format>
John F.
