Inflation raged. Interest rates topped 20 percent. Americans were held hostage in Iran. The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan with impunity. Japan was eating American manufacturing alive. Three networks controlled what Americans watched. China had been closed for 30 years.
Ten years later, everything had changed. The economy was booming. The Soviet Empire was collapsing. American businesses were competitive again.
In this immersive, character-driven narrative, Jonathan Kaufman lays bare the contending ideologies—and people—who battled for control of business, media and politics in the 1980s, shaping the way we live today. As Ronald Reagan and conservatives pummeled the Democratic party, as Jack Welch redefined leadership at Fortune 500 companies, and as deregulation spearheaded by Mark Fowler allowed television to become the hundreds of specialized and partisan channels we watch now, the groundwork was laid for our current economic and political conflicts. The decade also launched transformative social and political movements. Karen Nussbaum and Jane Fonda galvanized a struggling women’s movement, Evan Wolfson spearheaded the gay community’s legal fight against a hostile government, and Barack Obama cut his teeth as a community organizer in Chicago—all building long-lasting movements whose success progressives can learn from today.
From pivotal moments in board rooms and court rooms, to cultural touchstones like the birth of hip hop and of conservative talk radio, as well as the author’s eyewitness experiences in Tiananmen Square and Prague, When America Roared is the riveting story of how the 1980s built the world we live in, for better and for worse. It is the decade that made us—and the key to understanding where we go from here.

EAUDIOBOOK

eng

Kaufman, Jonathan

<format>EAUDIOBOOK</format>
How the 1980s Saved, Then Broke, the Country—and Led Us to Today

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9798217404285/MC.GIF&client=lakep&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

The One and the Ninety-Nine

This program includes a special bonus chapter with five actional practices for building a solid self.

It's not hard to find your tribe. The real challenge today is not losing yourself within one.

We are surrounded by tribes: political, professional, online, ideological. Each offer belonging at a price. Join, and you risk dissolving into a ready-made identity. Refuse, and you risk drifting into isolation. Either way, the modern person is pulled toward the same end: forming a fragmented self that is easier to manage, easier to sell to, and easier to recruit.
In The One and the Ninety-Nine, bestselling author Luke Burgis argues that the great crisis of our time is not simply polarization or loneliness, but a crisis of formation: it's difficult to form an identity that is solid enough to withstand the pressure of the crowd, and modern institutions don't reward the effort. Drawing from psychology, philosophy, and personal experience, Burgis shows how groups shape our desires, how "social contagion" spreads through families and institutions, and why the hunger to belong can turn ordinary people into instruments of movements they barely understand.
This audiobook is about the missing skill that makes real community possible: learning how to remain oneself while staying connected to others. Burgis offers a practical map for recognizing false belonging, escaping coercive dynamics, and passing through the rites of passage that produce people with integrity and courage.

The One and the Ninety-Nine is a timely and inspiring wake-up call, an invitation to reject counterfeit community and develop depth of personality—to become someone who can stand alone—so that we can finally stand together.
A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin's Press

EAUDIOBOOK

eng

Burgis, Luke

<format>EAUDIOBOOK</format>
Forging Identity in the Age of Social Contagion

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781250445131/MC.GIF&client=lakep&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

The Art of Fighting

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
FEATURED AT NBC’S TODAY SHOW, NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, AND MANY MORE
“This is not just a book about having better arguments, it's a manual for building stronger relationships.”—Adam Grant
“A paradigm-shifting examination of how we can get along better by understanding the role of conflict in our lives more deeply.” —Jefferson Fisher
“Priya Parker offers a generous, radically helpful guide through our divides—without flattening what makes us different.” — Suleika Jaouad
A paradigm-shattering exploration of how we fight and how we build healthy conflict, from the bestselling author of The Art of Gathering
We say we want community. Whether people disagree in the boardroom or the locker room, on a playground or in church, online or in person, conflict is a part of life, and understanding healthy conflict and how to harness its power is more important than ever. The Art of Fighting is a vital primer to help all of us understand how to do that.

EAUDIOBOOK

eng

Parker, Priya

<format>EAUDIOBOOK</format>
The Transformative Power of Conflict

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9798217354221/MC.GIF&client=lakep&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Arise Africa Magazine

Arise Africa Magazine is a premier Pan-African publication dedicated to inspiring, equipping, and celebrating the continent's next generation of leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, professionals, and changemakers. The company offered not just a career, but a moral project. In the heady early years of Big Tech and when Google's in-house slogan was "Don't be evil," it was easy to believe that technology wasn't just changing the world—it was going to fix it.

Stapleton quickly became known as the "Bard of Google," pulled into the rooms where the company narrated itself—writing speeches, blog posts, and executive communications for leaders including Larry Page. As she rose through increasingly rarefied roles, from the storied Creative Lab to YouTube marketing, she helped shape the myth from the inside.

But as the gap between Google's ideals and its reality widened, the dissonance became impossible to ignore. In 2018, amid outrage over the company's handling of sexual harassment, Stapleton helped organize the 20,000-employee Google Walkout—a defining rupture in Silicon Valley's self-image that The New York Times called a "watershed moment in tech." Overnight, she became a public face of employee revolt—and no longer someone the company could neatly fold back into its story.

Sharp, witty, and unsparing, Don't Be Evil is an insider's account of how power actually works—and a deeper reckoning with the stories we tell about work, purpose, and ourselves. In a culture that collapses identity into work, and as tech elites blur the line between private authority and public life, it asks: how much can you change from within—and when is it time to walk away?

EBOOK

eng

Stapleton, Claire

<format>EBOOK</format>
Bad Bosses, Fake Promises, and My Escape from Big Tech

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9780063465121/MC.GIF&client=lakep&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

REVISTA LIDE

Conteúdo de alta relevância para a tomada de decisão. I have never experienced such a disaster."

Still, Mateschitz recommended Red Bull, which is something a right-brain entrepreneur would do but most large companies would never do.

Rarely do large companies use unique, distinctive, and unique brand names such as Yahoo!, Amazon, Yellow Tail, Crocs, Gray Goose, Apple, and BlackBerry. Unique, distinctive, and unique brand names never perform well in tests.

This is not an indictment of the left-brain people at P&G. Most large companies act similarly. As a result, these companies have to buy back brands instead of launching their own brands.

EBOOK

eng

Wise, Amy

<format>EBOOK</format>

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9798869208873/MC.GIF&client=lakep&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Plain Talk

Plain Talk: Lessons from a Business Maverick

A visionary, maverick, and genuine American business hero, Ken Iverson is one of the most closely-watched business leaders in the world. We are a highly social species uniquely equipped to connect with other people and doing so is better for us. Yet we so often choose to be unsocial. We avoid talking to the stranger who sits next to us. We struggle to move beyond small talk with an acquaintance. We are reluctant to express our gratitude to people we appreciate. Every day, we avoid opportunities to connect with strangers, neighbors, colleagues, friends, and family. By missing those moments, we miss out on all the benefits of a more social life—one that is happier and healthier for everyone.
University of Chicago psychologist and author of Mindwise, Nicholas Epley has spent his career studying the way we connect, and he has found that our social fears often keep us from reaching out. But Epley shows us how to seize the small moments with insights such as:

Social connection is a choice we make based on expectations about how others will respond to us—expectations that tend to be overly pessimistic.

Introverts and extroverts alike benefit from choosing to be a little more social.

Mistaken expectations can cause us to avoid interacting in ways that create strong connections—such as having a conversation—in favor of less satisfying interactions—such as social media or texting.

While many books promise one big fix, making a habit of small connections is much more likely to improve your life.

The habits and practices that Epley advocates are approachable. The beauty of this book is that small acts have an outsized impact on the most important parts of our lives.

Bridging the gap between two people is easier than we think, and success more likely, if we choose to be a little more social.
*Includes a downloadable PDF containing data graphs and visuals from the book

EAUDIOBOOK

eng

Epley, Nicholas

<format>EAUDIOBOOK</format>
How Small Choices Create Unexpected Happiness, Health, and Connection

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9798217340743/MC.GIF&client=lakep&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

New Times

New Times is an Australian investing magazine for investors who want to understand not just what the markets are doing, but why they are moving. Jodi Kantor's groundbreaking reporting has toppled media magnates, sparked reform worldwide, and foretold many of the unsettling changes we see in the workplace today. But before all of this, Kantor was kicked off her college newspaper. Society expects perfection, but Kantor knows those first professional steps are often rocky. She also knows that young people are facing new and frightening terrain, with political upheaval, skyrocketing costs of living, and the unknowns of AI. Kantor casts aside platitudes and false hope to offer tangible help. Work is how we spend much of our time. It's our engine of progress: how cancer therapies are invented, political campaigns won, thrilling art created and matched with an audience. Instead of letting cynicism take over, Kantor identifies two principles to help young people discover their life's work: craft and need. By pairing the two, they can navigate tough, sensitive choices: how to think about money. How much risk to take on. When to buck what others are saying. Powerful and provocative, How to Start is a statement of faith for young people as they make their way through uncertain times, offering wisdom, strategy, and a set of aspirations to launch their careers and last their whole lives.

BK

eng

Kantor, Jodi

<format>BK</format>
Discovering your Life's Work

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9780316609555/MC.GIF&client=lakep&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

NAUTIK MAGAZINE

Nautik Magazine España es la publicación del grupo Forbes dedicada a la Economía Azul y al universo marítimo desde una perspectiva amplia y transversal.
