Part of the reason is Emanuel’s job description. As Hollywood’s best-known super-agent—the inspiration for Ari Gold in the classic TV drama Entourage—he’s paid to speak for his A-list clients, not himself. Now, for the first time, the agent, the mogul, the ferocious power broker, speaks for himself, about himself, and about the game of life—often at the top of his lungs. In Roll the Calls, his take-no-prisoners memoir, Emanuel tells the incredible stories behind the signings and firings, the triumphant mergers and nasty breakups, the hard-won victories and crushing mistakes. With great comic zest, and in precise cinematic detail, he traces the arc of a classic rags-to-riches career, from suffering through severe dyslexia, to clerking in the mailroom of CAA, to striking out on his own with three fellow agents, launching a new talent agency that would go on to represent some of the most glittering names in show business, including Larry David, Quentin Tarantino, Denzel Washington, Billie Eilish, Martin Scorsese, and Oprah Winfrey. Along the way Emanuel was also raising four kids, fighting and reconciling with friends and colleagues, coping with a failing marriage, and struggling to find love again. Shattering the mold of stodgy CEO memoirs, Roll the Calls is told in a punchy, telegraphic style, with disarming humility and ribald candor. It’s a fable about success and failure, about creativity and persistence, and a master class in how to ignore the haters, how to overcome withering self-doubt, and, at moments of profound crisis and despair, how to be a fearless advocate for your most vulnerable client: yourself.

BK

eng

Emanuel, Ari

<format>BK</format>
A Memoir

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9798217209347/MC.GIF&client=lakep&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

In the Shadow of Eight

"For years, the world watched Jon & Kate Plus 8 through a lens of curated joy. But while the cameras captured the milestones, they missed the moments that defined Collin Gosselin's life: the Christmas morning where the gifts were reclaimed as soon as the cameras went down, and the basement room where silence was his only companion. In the Shadow of Eight is the first account of a secret childhood lived in the gaps between the frames. Collin is finally sharing the truth about the "help" that held him down, the basement cell where he was hidden for years, and the cocktail of powerful antipsychotics forced on an eleven-year-old boy. Then there is George Washington, who, outnumbered and outgunned against the most powerful military force in the world, innovates a new way of warfare and an improbable road to victory in the Revolutionary War. Captain Daniel Shays follows, a man who loses everything to stand up for the little man while helping to inspire the Constitutional Convention. James Madison challenges the British Goliath again, declaring the War of 1812 and rallying the United States in its first foray into making America a respected world power. Finally, John Quincy Adams, the conscience of the country, launches the nations hardest-ever conversation, attempting to erase Americas original sin. When the colonists threw off British rule, they launched a great experiment in democracy. Self-government by the people, with a sworn commitment to equality and liberty for all, had never been tried. It is still a living object of power and beauty among us" To many people, the word samurai conjures images of menacing masks, long blades and elaborate armor. However, this classic text by Inazo Nitobe reveals the greater depths to samurai culture - they were not simply warriors but an aristocratic class who practiced literary and military arts in equal measure. Essential to this way of life was the samurai's moral code and the quality of bushido, roughly translated as chivalry. The Way of the Samurai provides an intriguing exploration of bushido and other valued qualities such as rectitude or justice, courage, politeness, veracity, honor, loyalty and self-control. It also explores the Samurai's more violent traditions, such as the chilling act of hara-kiri or self-immolation. This mixture of chivalric principles with brutal warfare is fascinating. While many aspects of Samurai culture have disappeared, its principles still have resonance in modern Japanese society and around the globe.

BK

eng

Nitobe, Inazo

<format>BK</format>

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781398808751/MC.GIF&client=lakep&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Actually, Nevermind

"As she approaches thirty-four—the same age her mother, Angela, was at her death—Tomlinson grapples with fear and ambition, identity and doubt, and all the ways her mind has changed since the day her mom died. Martin L. Sweet served as mayor of the city in 1860. He was an entrepreneur who owned banks, flour mills, furniture factories, railroads, and plank roads. In 1869 he built a hotel at the intersection of Pearl Street and Monroe Avenue where the Amway Grand Plaza stands today. The Maestro, Ottokar Malek, operated a school of music in the mansion from 1914 to 1919. He was a concert pianist and founded the Grand Rapids Civic Orchestra, known today as the Grand Rapids Symphony. The Mansion, built by Martin Sweet in the 1860s, was home of the Women's City Club for 90 years from 1928 to 2018. The club hosted celebrities, entertainers, and politicians at its social and educational events and filled the house with art and antiques. Blige and the Notorious B.I.G., the landscape of American-and world-music would look and sound entirely different. For decades, mainstream performers clamored to be close to Diddy; his charisma, vision, and brand of cool transformed hip-hop culture into a multibillion-dollar powerhouse. While his acumen built an empire that reflected the biggest names in not only music but also fashion, business, and the bright lights of Hollywood, another side of Combs was hidden from public view. In Bad Boy for Life, journalist Cheyenne Roundtree's investigation builds upon her extensive coverage, excavating the disturbing history of Combs' alleged abuse and sexual violence. Through cultural insights, meticulous reporting, and in-depth interviews with more than a hundred sources, she examines Combs' misuse of power that led to the criminal trial in 2025 that caused his kingdom to unravel. Ultimately, this narrative uses Combs' life to tell the much bigger story of hip-hop's ascension, the wider music industry, and fame's sinister aspects. This is one of the most significant pop-culture stories of our time, one that charts the path of an impresario while asking questions about accountability and justice, who is believed and who is silenced, and why we protect the powerful. Yet, at the height of her promise, she made a radical choice that would define the course of her life. Turning away from worldly recognition and social convention, she forged her own path—one that led her through the roughest streets of London and, ultimately, to the deserts of North Africa. There, her artistic and spiritual journeys intertwined as she expanded the many-colored canvas of her creativity to embrace not only the sweeping vistas of the Sahara, but also the lives of the Arab people she loved. Blending biography, personal engagement, and theological reflection, Trafton takes readers on an intimate journey with Lily as her friends knew her – a visionary who saw the world with an artist’s eye and a missionary’s heart, and whose imaginative empathy and creative compassion transformed the lives of those she encountered. On May 8, 2025, eighteen days after the death of Pope Francis, Cardinal Dominique Mamberti stepped out on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica to share the name of the new leader of the Catholic Church. "Eminentissimum ac reverendissimum Dominum, Robertum Franciscum Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae Cardinalem Prevost-qui sibi nomen imposuit Leo XIV." For the first time in its 2,000 year history, the Catholic Church would be led by an American. NPR's Daniel Burke and Scott Detrow, who were in St. Peter's Square that day leading the network's coverage, were among those shocked by the selection. Growing up in the faith as kids and reporting on it as adults, they had been told it was an article of faith, a given, that the Catholic Church would never elect an American pope. And yet, there was Prevost-now Leo XIV-smiling, waving, and declaring to the crowd in Italian, "Peace be with you." Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who grew up just outside Chicago but had spent much of his adult life in Peru, had been a dark horse candidate to say the least-an unassuming Augustinian who had only recently been promoted to the top levels of Church leadership. His elevation to the most prominent religious seat in the world prompted unprecedented enthusiasm-a surge of "Da Pope" memes and American tourists flocking to Rome with gifts of deep dish pizza and hats from Villanova (his alma mater)-but despite international media coverage and fascination, the scope of Prevost's journey has yet to be told in full, intimate detail. Now, in American Pope, Burke and Detrow present the first comprehensive, impressively sourced biography of the new pontiff. The two journalists spent the year after Leo's election reporting in Peru, Chicago, and Rome. They tracked down Leo's close confidants, childhood friends, family members, classmates, fellow clergy, and Vatican insiders. They gained unprecedented access to archival documents, letters, emails, and other personal correspondence that provide key insights into Prevost's experiences and views. As a result, readers are introduced to a man at varying stages of his destiny: Robert, a quiet young boy from a working-class parish straddling Chicago's southern border, coming into his faith in Kennedy-era America; Bob, a serious student who writes for his high school paper and spends time in the seminary leading family interventions for alcoholics; Padre and Monsignor Roberto, a stabilizing and hopeful presence in impoverished and terrorized communities of Peru, and who would help lead his diocese through the COVID-19 pandemic; Father Bob, the leader of the Augustinian order at a time of crisis for the Catholic Church; Cardinal Prevost, the unassuming ally of Pope Francis; and, finally, Leo, whose ascension will forever change the Church he serves and loves. Enlightening, engrossing, and undeniably human, American Pope is the key to understanding one of the most consequential figures of our time"-- Provided by publisher.

BK

eng

Burke, Daniel

<format>BK</format>
Leo XIV's Road From the South Side of Chicago to Vatican City

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781250446053/MC.GIF&client=lakep&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

The Phantom

Soldier, spy, scout, saboteur, and French Resistance leader in the heart of Nazi-occupied Europe--the untold story of Marine legend Pete Ortiz. Major Pierre "Pete" Ortiz was a Manhattan-born and Paris-educated polymath fluent in five languages. An adventuresome French Foreign Legion veteran specifically recruited by "Wild" Bill Donovan's Office of Strategic Services (the precursor to both the CIA and U.S. Special Forces) upon his enlistment in the Marines, Ortiz was the officer "Wild Bill" instinctively knew he needed and could rely on to complete a string of clandestine missions. While recuperating from gunshot wounds received during a behind-the-lines excursion into enemy-held North Africa, Ortiz delivered his After-Action Report directly to Donovan in Washington. After reading it, "Wild Bill" scrawled across the top of the report: "Please re-employ this man as soon as possible." Ortiz's handlers heeded Donovan's request. Within a year Ortiz was surreptitiously parachuted into the Haute Savoie region of Occupied France, where he made contact with the resistance fighters who called themselves Maquisards. By the time he retired as a United States Marine Corps colonel, he received two Navy Crosses for extraordinary heroism in World War II. In 1922, Hugo Bettauer published the novel The City Without Jews , a satirical critique of Austrian antisemitism. Three years later he would be killed by an early follower of the Nazi Party. More than a decade later, in March 1938, the novel's terrifying vision of a Vienna emptied of Jews would begin to be realized. German troops poured into the glittering city, marking the beginning of seven years of unfathomable state-sanctioned violence against the Jewish population. A work of great power and urgency, The City Without Jews: Life and Death in Nazi Vienna tells the dramatic story of these seven years as they have never been told before. Drawing on hundreds of sources, many of which have lain untouched for decades, the historian Douglas Smith captures with novelistic immediacy the intertwined lives of those who experienced this age of extremes. And of all these voices, one stands out: a middle-aged nurse named Mignon Langnas, a Jewish woman who would see all her friends and family, and her entire world, disappear. The only Jew who spent the entire seven years in Nazi Vienna and left behind such a detailed record of her life, Mignon, in her letters and diaries, shows herself to be a woman of exceptional strength, compassion, and dignity, seeking to make sense of the once-vibrant city that had now turned against her. By turns heartbreakingly intimate and dazzlingly epic, The City Without Jews tells the story of the destruction of Jewish Vienna in previously untapped breadth and detail. Even more than a work of history, it is a reminder and a warning-of the consequences of forgetting a past whose legacy refuses to die.

BK

eng

Smith, Douglas

<format>BK</format>
Life and Death in Nazi Vienna

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9780374606558/MC.GIF&client=lakep&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

An Indigenous Peoples' History Of The United States: Tenth Aniiversary Edition

UK

und

DUNBAR-ORTIZ, ROXANNE

<format>UK</format>

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9780807013076/MC.GIF&client=lakep&type=xw12&oclc=&upc=</image_url>

Taylor Swift

""It was so obvious she had something. You know, she was 13, and she had that sparkle. So much sparkle dust around her," - Renee Bell, head of A&R at RCA Records Meet Taylor, 2003. She's a teen who came to Nashville with blisters on her fingers from learning to play a 12-string guitar. In every room she enters, she's the youngest person (by decades) and often the only woman. And if anyone asked if she could see herself becoming the biggest superstar on the planet, her answer probably would have been yes. Writing alongside industry veterans after school, Taylor Swift's songwriting ability set her apart. But her origins are more complex than a teen tapping into a new generation of country music fans. It's a story of taking risks, like walking away from powerhouse label RCA to strike out with an unknown, unfunded new label, and of trusting her instincts when no one else did. Washington Post reporter Emily Yahr pulls back the curtain on the country music industry-from executives who said yes to Taylor (and those who regret saying no), to collaborators like Scott Borchetta, Nathan Chapman, and Liz Rose, to Nashville itself. Intimate and immersive, Yahr takes us to iconic locations like Music Row and The Bluebird Cafe, as well as to Hendersonville High and the Swifts' own lakefront house. Taylor Swift: The Debut Years tells the definitive origin story of today's biggest star, with never-before-published interviews. Taylor's decade in Nashville shaped her as a musician, and ultimately changed country music itself long after she left the genre"-- Provided by publisher.

BK

eng

Yahr, Emily

<format>BK</format>
The Debut Years

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781250379252/MC.GIF&client=lakep&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

The Rush

In January 1848, a carpenter spotted flecks of gold in a shallow stream at Sutter's Mill in California, triggering the greatest voluntary migration in U.S. history, as hundreds of thousands raced west in pursuit of sudden wealth, reinvention, and power. From the feverish gold-mining camps of the Sierra Nevada mountains to the wharves and vigilance committees of San Francisco, Nathaniel Philbrick renders a combustible, all-world society: Chilean brothers reinventing themselves to outrun prejudice; Native communities navigating dispossession and violence; the merchant-showman Samuel Brannan, drawn into the center of early vigilantism; and the politicians vying for control of California's future--the ambitious Free-Soil political boss David Broderick, who squared off against William Gwin, the Southern power broker intent on tilting the state toward slavery and the Confederacy. In The Rush, Nathaniel Philbrick transforms the Gold Rush from a tale of sudden riches into the origin story of America's modern contradictions--capital consolidated at dizzying speed, democracy in thrall to private power, xenophobia weaponized in the name of liberty--and a stubborn belief in the American experiment that refuses to die. This is the story of a nation tearing at the seams and a republic tested by its own ideals. Not until a year after the outbreak of the Civil War, when President Lincoln signed legislation that would unite the nation east to west by building a transcontinental railroad, was California's loyalty secured.

BK

eng

Philbrick, Nathaniel

<format>BK</format>
California Gold, the Civil War, and the Making of the Modern World

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9780525562238/MC.GIF&client=lakep&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Devil on My Shoulder

"More than rock 'n' roll royalty, Alice Cooper is a living legend who has transformed shock rock and left an indelible mark on music and pop culture.
