Shreya loves to paint. Her world is filled with bright, bold colors as lively as she is. Even her art teacher, Mr. Rao, thinks her work is ""marvelous."" But when he asks to paint her during recess when the other kids are outside, Shreya's excitement turns to fear. The moment she arrives, she knows something is wrong, and in that moment, she freezes. The experience shatters her love of painting, leaving her feeling awful and unable to find the words to tell her mother why. Her former rival, Meera, has also become Mr. Rao's new subject. But unlike Shreya, Meera yells ""No!"" and runs for help. Meera's example gives Shreya the courage she needs to reclaim her voice and her love of art. This crucial resource for families and book collections everywhere includes guidance and resources to help parents and children navigate this important topic."--Amazon

BK

eng

Patel, Khushboo

<format>BK</format>
A Story About Body Safety and Consent

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781646146307/MC.GIF&client=mnetp&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Extreme Birdwatching

"Daphne is an island. Not one you'd choose for a vacation. There are no sandy beaches, resorts, hotels, or houses. No tall trees to make shade. The steep, rocky sides of a volcanic Galapagos island are not inviting, and most who visit this part of the world sail right past. But Peter and Rosemary Grant are not most people. A husband-and-wife team, the Grants came to this singular place with a singular goal: to study two species of wild finch. For decades, the scientists and their students counted, cataloged, and observed finches on a remote mile-wide island. Through teamwork, painstaking observation--extreme bird-watching, extreme plant study, extreme seed counting--and careful beak measurements, the group of committed scientists proved step-by-step, over 40 years, how finch beaks change in response to their environment. A treasure trove for science classrooms, citizen scientists, and budding biologists, this "you-are-there" account of a landmark study of wild finches going about their finch-y business captures the scientific process in action."

BK

eng

Burns, Loree Griffin

<format>BK</format>
Measuring Change on A Galapagos Island

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781536232806/MC.GIF&client=mnetp&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Ren's Pencil

"When her family moves to a new country, Ren is heartbroken to leave Popo and her magical stories behind. Look for Book 2, Muskwa's Tipi Talks, coming in Winter 2025! Sarah Ponakey has moved to the city from her home community with her mom and it's the pits! She misses her Kohkom, her best friend Eden, and the forests around her community. She's had a hard time making new friends at school but at least she keeps in touch with Eden through meticulously written letters with very big words. After a particularly tough day where she nearly loses her favorite stuffed animal, Ahasiw, and is brushed off by her mom, Sarah finds herself transported to a magical forest powwow . . . Accompanied by a life-sized Ahasiw in his beautiful regalia, Sarah watches in excitement as a chipmunk emcees, and bears play the host drum at her first ever powwow. The more she sees, the more her confidence grows. As she joins in the celebration, Sarah discovers that she can connect to her Cree culture no matter where she is. Her Kohkom's going to love this story! Ahasiw's Forest Powwow, the first book from debut children's author Sita MacMillan, features Cree words throughout the story and a note to the reader. This 40th anniversary edition features a new introduction by critic James Wolcott and an afterword by the author.

New Orleans-born novelist Nancy Lemann returned to her hometown from Manhattan in 1985, tasked by renowned editor Tina Brown to cover Governor Edwin Edwards's two corruption trials for Vanity Fair. The work that emerged from this trip was less a straightforward account of the court proceedings and instead a masterful portrait of the politicians, their families, the lawyers, and the other reporters covering the trials, rendered in sparse, wry vignettes. Championed and edited by Gordon Lish, The Ritz of the Bayou is Lemann's sole book of nonfiction and has attained lost classic status in the decades it has languished out of print.

In hazy, atmospheric scenes of cigar smoke-laden bars, heaping plates of oysters, and unchecked eccentricity and chaos, Lemann observes both the proceedings and a glamorous Gulf Coast gone shabby from humidity and time. She captures New Orleans's particular "tropic zone," where "the two great enemies of Louisianians are boredom and lack of style," and its citizens choose charismatic leaders over ethical ones, writing, "Politics is not the place to look for saints."

An account of government corruption and Southern character that transcends its moment, The Ritz of the Bayou is Lemann at the height of her powers. This edition reestablishes a classic of Southern literature, rewarding its longtime fans and introducing her talent to a new generation of readers.

EBOOK

eng

Lemann, Nancy

<format>EBOOK</format>

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9798885740739/MC.GIF&client=mnetp&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

The Oyster Diaries

From the author of the cult classic Lives of the Saints, a diaristic novel of middle-aged reckoning that roves from Washington, D.C. to New Orleans, from court records to Don Giovanni, all of it riotously narrated by one of American fiction’s most singular voices.
Delery Anhalt—middle-aged and prone, like Don Quixote, to “embroidering everything into vast ideals” but incapable (like Desdemona?) of identifying the Shakespearean villains in her life—finds herself at a crossroads. Her father and his peers, the old guard of New Orleans, are entering their twilight years. Her daughters are stepping decisively into adulthood. Delery, caught between the demands of the generations, takes stock of herself in a series of diaries that move freely between present and past: from the waning days of Covid and her employment as a virtual court monitor of criminal cases in New Orleans to the travails of daily life in Washington, DC. Known for his unvarying image of bowler hat, three-piece suit, and umbrella, Satie was a surrealist before surrealism and a conceptual artist before conceptual art. Friend of Cocteau and Debussy, Picabia and Picasso, Satie was always a few steps ahead of his peers at the apex of modernism. There's scarcely a turn in postwar music, both classical and popular, that Satie doesn't anticipate. Moving from the variety shows of Montmartre's Le Chat Noir to suburban Arcueil, from the Parisian demimonde to the artistic avant-garde, cult critic Ian Penman's masterful Erik Satie three piece suite is an exhilarating and playful three-part study of this elusive and endlessly fascinating figure, published to mark the centenary of Satie's death."--Back cover

BK

eng

Penman, Ian

<format>BK</format>

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781635902532/MC.GIF&client=mnetp&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Bat and the Case of the Yips

For Bixby Alexander Tam (nicknamed "Bat"), nothing is more important than Thor, his pet skunk. Her job allows her to travel the world, and she has never stayed in the same place for too long. When Carmello learns that his mother left shares of her beloved restaurant to both him and Olivia, he plans to buy her half of the shares back quickly and painlessly. That is until Olivia shows up at the restaurant, ready to help run it. Now Carmello sees an opportunity: drive Olivia away from his restaurant so that she will want to sign over her shares. But Olivia sees a different opportunity. She finally has the chance to stay in one place and build a home after years on the move, and perhaps now is the right time to explore whether that home can be with the one who got away.
