TIEFLAND (Lowlands) dramatizes the conflicts between the shepherds on the slopes of the Spanish Pyrenees and the power-hungry Don Sebastian (Bernhard Minetti) who diverts their water to the plains below, in order to feed his cattle. Don Sebastian becomes smitten with Martha, an exotic Spanish dancer (Riefenstahl), and schemes to add her to his menagerie. Martha tries to broker a peace between the cattle baron and the shepherds, but Don Sebastian's greed is insatiable, and a violent confrontation seems inevitable. TIEFLAND was filmed in 1932, but the footage was confiscated by Allied forces during World War II. It wasn't until 1954 that Riefenstahl was able to complete the film-in spite of some of the footage having been lost in the interim. This edition of TIEFLAND was restored in 4K from the original 35mm negative.

VIDEO_ONLINE

ger

<format>VIDEO_ONLINE</format>

<image_url/>

The Blue Light

By the end of the silent era, Leni Riefenstahl had become an iconic German actress for her athletic performances in the mountain-climbing films of director Arnold Fanck. So it was only natural that, when making her directorial debut, she should return to the genre which had made her famous. In THE BLUE LIGHT (Das blaue Licht), she plays Junta, an eccentric mountain girl whom the villagers believe to be a witch, since she and only she can reach the peak of the deadly Monte Cristallo, atop which is a cache of luminous gemstones. She befriends a painter (Mathias Wieman) and, beneath a full moon, leads him to the forbidden grotto, not realizing the tragic repercussions of having disturbed the ethereal crystals. Working with cinematographers Hans Schneeberger and Heinz von Jaworsky, Riefenstahl created a dazzling ode to the senses, a folk tale laced with magic and overshadowed by the formidable visual impact of the Dolomites.

VIDEO_ONLINE

ger

<format>VIDEO_ONLINE</format>

<image_url/>

Triumph of the Will

For almost a century, Leni Riefenstahl's TRIUMPH OF THE WILL (Triumph des Willens) has reigned as the most controversial documentary ever made, a "cinema masterpiece," according to film historian Amos Vogel, "a huge and disturbing film spectacle." Capturing the pageantry of the 1934 Nuremberg congress, TRIUMPH OF THE WILL l downplays political rhetoric in favor of a sensory tableaux that celebrates the nation's resurgence in the aftermath of the crushing post-WWI economic depression. With soaring aerial photography, striking moving camera shots, and the complex choreography of thousands of soldiers, TRIUMPH OF THE WILL depicts a nation rising undefeated from the ashes, working together as a unified whole, and honoring the traditions of a bygone era. Riefenstahl commanded a squad of photographers and oversaw the editing of the film, creating a landmark of documentary cinema, even as it permanently stained the reputation of the filmmaker, who spent a lifetime trying to disassociate herself from the Nazi leadership.

VIDEO_ONLINE

ger

<format>VIDEO_ONLINE</format>

<image_url/>

Longing for Innocence

Between 1963 and 1976, filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl spent months living among in the Nuba people in the Kordofan Province of Sudan, documenting their cultural traditions as well as the everyday activities crucial to their very survival. The Nuba Mountains provided Riefenstahl with a means of rediscovering life in its most essential form, while escaping the notoriety that had overshadowed her in the wake of her notorious propaganda film TRIUMPH OF THE WILL. In this otherworldly setting, Riefenstahl captured stark ethnographic images of statuesque bodies of warriors and women covered in dye, undergoing ritual scarification, and engaging in communal dance-their movements so infectious that the filmmaker was unable to resist participating herself. It proved to be the rebirth Riefenstahl had sought, and she published two books of photographs that returned her to the forefront of contemporary artists (and once again incited the wrath of her critics). Riefenstahl herself never completed a film of her Nuba experience, and this special edition, produced by La Tresor (the legal successor of her estate), is the most comprehensive assemblage of the footage ever released.

VIDEO_ONLINE

ger

<format>VIDEO_ONLINE</format>

<image_url/>

Riefenstahl

Filmmaker and Nazi propagandist Leni Riefenstahl is considered one of the most controversial women of the 20th century. Her films Triumph of the Will and Olympia are defined by their fascist aesthetics, perfectly-staged body worship, and the celebration of all that is "superior" and victorious, simultaneously projecting contempt for the imperfect and weak. But Riefenstahl - who first broke into the German film industry as an actress - spent decades after the war denying her association with Nazi ideology, and claiming ignorance of the Holocaust. How did she become the Reich's preeminent filmmaker if she was just a hired hand? RIEFENSTAHL examines this question using never-before-seen documents from Leni Riefenstahl's estate, including private films, photos, recordings and letters, uncovering fragments of her biography and placing them in an extended historical context. During her long life after the fall of Nazism, she remained unapologetic, managing to control and shape her legacy; in personal documents, she mourns her "murdered ideals." Meanwhile, her work would experience a renaissance, gaining esteem for its masterful technical skill. Today, Riefenstahl's aesthetics are more present than ever. Is that also true for their message? In an era where fascism is on the rise again, fake news is prevalent, and the meaning of political imagery is constantly dissected and debated, Andres Veiel's mesmerizing new film shows that Leni Reifenstahl is more relevant than ever.

VIDEO_ONLINE

ger

<format>VIDEO_ONLINE</format>

<image_url/>

Mola

Kunsang Wangmo, known as "Mola" (grandmother) has been away from home for nearly 60 years. Thomas is a toolmaker apprentice with a working-class background, and Michael is a high-school student from an educated middle-class family. When Thomas decides to break the rules by squatting in a vacant apartment and distributing protest flyers, no one seems to care-except for the Stasi. This surreal and absurd comedy, the directorial full-length film debut of Peter Welz, breaks with mainstream East German film practices and offers a subversive collage of East German society in the late 1970s.The film, produced by DaDaeR, DEFA's production group for young directors, marked a radical break with the formal and aesthetic DEFA norms. This feature debut by 27-year-old Peter Welz, who had made shorts based on scripts by Frank Castorf and Leander Haussmann, tried a new kind of cinematic language.
