The tale follows Pid, a shape-shifting alien from the Grom species, on a mission to Earth using advanced Displacer technology. As the Grom crew confronts both the alien terrain and their own internal conflicts, the story dives into questions of conformity, identity, and rebellion against rigid societal roles. Pid's journey becomes a metaphor for self-discovery as he wrestles with the oppressive structure of Grom society and the tantalizing freedom of embracing fluid identity. The Hour of Battle by Robert Sheckley delivers a gripping tale of suspense, set against the vast backdrop of deep space. As Earth relies on its last line of defense, the psychological toll of an invisible, telepathic enemy creates a slow-burning tension that blurs the line between paranoia and reality. A masterclass in speculative fiction, this story explores the depths of human consciousness, autonomy, and the cost of vigilance in a war you might not even know you're fighting.

EAUDIOBOOK

eng

Sheckley, Robert

<format>EAUDIOBOOK</format>

<image_url>https://contentcafe2.btol.com/ContentCafe/Jacket.aspx?&userID=NWMK84113&password=CC49311&Value=9798347393572&content=M&Return=1&Type=M</image_url>

Ask a Foolish Question

Ask a Foolish Question by Robert Sheckley is a provocative science fiction tale that delves into the philosophical nature of inquiry, intelligence, and the pursuit of ultimate truth. First published in the early 1950s, the story follows beings from across the universe-especially Morran and Lingman-as they seek out the enigmatic Answerer, a near-omniscient entity designed to reveal the answers to any question. But as the seekers discover, the quality of the answer depends entirely on the quality of the question. Sheckley weaves a clever and contemplative narrative that challenges readers to consider how knowledge is shaped not just by what we ask, but by our ability to understand the answers. Perfect for fans of thought-provoking science fiction, Ask a Foolish Question is a timeless meditation on the limits of understanding and the nature of wisdom.

EAUDIOBOOK

eng

Sheckley, Robert

<format>EAUDIOBOOK</format>

<image_url>https://contentcafe2.btol.com/ContentCafe/Jacket.aspx?&userID=NWMK84113&password=CC49311&Value=9798347377961&content=M&Return=1&Type=M</image_url>

Lost Sci-Fi Books 256 Thru 260 - Five Vintage Sci-Fi Short Stories From the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s

Lost Sci-Fi Books 256 thru 260 - Five Vintage Sci-Fi Short Stories from the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s

But their uneasy alliance dissolves fast as greed, paranoia, and raw ambition transform the red planet into a battleground of human betrayal.
"The Last Weapon" showcases Robert Sheckley at his sharpest, blending dark humor with razor-edged tension as he unspools a tale of power, corruption, and the catastrophic relics of a lost world. Each discovery raises the stakes until the final, unforgettable confrontation - one that proves the Martians saved their most astonishing creation for last.
Robert Sheckley (1928–2005) stands as one of science fiction's most inventive and mischievous voices. Known for his wit, philosophical playfulness, and talent for blending satire with suspense, Sheckley wrote hundreds of stories that continue to influence modern sci-fi. His work appeared in Galaxy, IF, Playboy, and many other top magazines, earning him a reputation as a writer who could twist a simple premise into something brilliantly unexpected. With so much at stake, Charles Dennison should not have been careless. An inventor cannot afford carelessness, particularly when his invention is extremely valuable and obviously patentable. There are too many grasping hands ready to seize what belongs to someone else, too many men who feast upon the creativity of the innocent.
A touch of paranoia would have served Dennison well; but he was lacking in that vital characteristic of inventors. And he didn't even realize the full extent of his carelessness until a bullet, fired from a silenced weapon, chipped a granite wall not three inches from his head.
Then he knew. But by then it was too late.
Charles Dennison had been left a more than adequate income by his father. He had gone to Harvard, served a hitch in the Navy, then continued his education at M.I.T. Since the age of thirty-two, he had been engaged in private research, working in his own small laboratory in Riverdale, New York. Plant biology was his field. He published several noteworthy papers, and sold a new insecticide to a development corporation. The royalties helped him to expand his facilities.
Dennison enjoyed working alone. It suited his temperament, which was austere but not unfriendly. Two or three times a year, he would come to New York, see some plays and movies, and do a little serious drinking. He would then return gratefully to his seclusion. He was a bachelor and seemed destined to remain that way.
Not long after his fortieth birthday, Dennison stumbled across an intriguing clue which led him into a different branch of biology. He pursued his clue, developed it, extended it slowly into a hypothesis. After three more years, a lucky accident put the final proofs into his hands.

EAUDIOBOOK

eng

Sheckley, Robert

<format>EAUDIOBOOK</format>
The Bureaucracy Of Immortality

<image_url>https://contentcafe2.btol.com/ContentCafe/Jacket.aspx?&userID=NWMK84113&password=CC49311&Value=9798318404252&content=M&Return=1&Type=M</image_url>
