Extraordinary Black Men in Sports & the Struggle Against Segregation in Prefessional Baseball, Basketball & Football

The history of Black men in sports is a powerful narrative of resilience, courage, and triumph over adversity. These extraordinary athletes not only excelled in their respective fields but also played pivotal roles in challenging the deeply entrenched societal prejudices of their time. Emerging from an era marked by stark segregation and Jim Crow laws, they faced systemic racism that sought to limit their opportunities and diminish their achievements. Yet, through their remarkable talent and unwavering determination, they broke color barriers in professional baseball, basketball, and football, paving the way for future generations. Continuing the Legacy. These stories are not just tales of athletic prowess; they are narratives of resilience, courage, and the relentless pursuit of equality. These athletes have not only changed the landscape of professional sports but have also inspired generations to challenge societal norms and fight for justice. Their legacies remind us that the struggle against segregation and discrimination is ongoing, and the fight for equality in sports and beyond continues.

DVD

eng

<format>DVD</format>

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=/MC.GIF&client=youngp&type=xw12&oclc=&upc=709629057852</image_url>

Jesse Owens

"A compelling resource for sports enthusiasts, Jesse Owens: A Life in American History places the life and athletic accomplishments of Jesse Owens within the context of race and American history in the early 20th century"-- Provided by publisher.

BK

eng

Brooks, F. The Forgotten First chronicles the lives of four incredible men, the racism they experienced as Black players entering a segregated sport, the burden of expectation they carried, and their many achievements, which would go on to affect football for generations to come. More than a year before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball, there was another seismic moment in pro sports history. On March 21,1946, former UCLA star running back Kenny Washington - a teammate of Robinson's in college--signed a contract with the Los Angeles Rams. This ended one of the most shameful periods in NFL history, when African-American players were banned from league play. Washington would not be alone in serving as a pioneer for NFL integration. Just months after he joined the Rams, thanks to a concerted effort by influential Los Angeles political and civic leaders, the team signed Woody Strode, who played with both Washington and Robinson at UCLA in one of the most celebrated backfields in college sports history. And that same year, a little-known coach named Paul Brown of the fledgling Cleveland Browns signed running back Marion Motley and defensive lineman Bill Willis, thereby integrating a startup league that would eventually merge with the NFL. The Forgotten First tells the story of one of the most significant cultural shifts in pro football history, as four men opened the door to opportunity and changed the sport forever. -- Provided by publisher.

BK

eng

Johnson, Keyshawn

<format>BK</format>
Kenny Washington, Woody Strode, Marion Motley, Bill Willis, and the Breaking of the NFL Color Barrier

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781538705483/MC.GIF&client=youngp&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

When Women Stood

"When Women Stood is an unapologetically new sport and social history that unveils the often-overlooked chronicle of women and their fight for equality. The press and the public blamed young Black players for the chaos in the NBA, citing drugs, violence, greed, and criminality. The supposed decline of pro basketball became a metaphor for the first decades of integration in America: the rules of the game had changed, allowing more Black people onto a formerly white playing field, and now they were ruining everything. But Black Ball argues that this much-maligned period was pivotal to the rise of the NBA as the star-laden powerhouse we know today, thanks largely to the efforts of Black players in challenging the white basketball establishment of owners, coaches, and spectators. Spotlighting legendary players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bernard King, and Connie Hawkins, scholar Theresa Runstedtler expertly rewrites basketball's "Dark Ages," weaving together her deep knowledge of the game's key icons and institutions with incisive social and political analysis of the era. Black ballers created an aerial, improvisational, and creative style derived from the playground courts of their neighborhoods, laying the foundation for the explosive popularity and profitability of the league in subsequent decades. They also transformed labor in the pro-basketball world, filing lawsuits and organizing unions to demand better salaries and greater autonomy. Without their skills, style, and savvy, there would be no Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson, or LeBron James today"-- Provided by publisher.

BK

eng

Runstedtler, Theresa

<format>BK</format>
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Spencer Haywood, and the Generation That Saved the Soul of the NBA

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781645036951/MC.GIF&client=youngp&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Walking Alone

"The inspirational story of African American trailblazer Kenny Washington, the first player to reintegrate the NFL and the first Black football coach in America, considered by many to be the greatest football player of his time"-- Provided by publisher.

BK

eng

Taylor, Dan

<format>BK</format>
The Untold Journey of Football Pioneer Kenny Washington

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781538154366/MC.GIF&client=youngp&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

All Star

"In 1947, Larry Doby signed with the Cleveland Indians, becoming the first Black player in the American leagues. He takes us from Roberto Clemente clinching his 3,000th, and final, regular season hit in Pittsburgh, to ringside for the Muhammad Ali vs. George Foreman fight in Zaire, and to Arthur Ashe announcing, at a news conference, that he'd tested positive for HIV. There are also little known private moments: a despairing Roberto Clemente at his last locker after the historic hit, not knowing it; Joe Morgan whispering thank you to a virtually blind Jackie Robinson on the field at the 1972 World Series.
