At the heart of Lyalin's story is a narrative entwined with lies, disinformation, Kremlin deception campaigns, paranoia, intelligence failures by the CIA and MI5, and a tangled love life. Unravelling amidst a Soviet mission to plant fake Kremlin 'defectors' within British and American intelligence agencies, this story reveals how the secrets Lyalin divulged, resulted in one of the most dramatic and pivotal moments in the Cold War. Lyalin led MI5 to rethink its relationship with the CIA and, ultimately, helped destroy the reputation of the US agency's head of counterintelligence, James Jesus Angleton. Drawing on newly declassified intelligence files, dozens of interviews with spymasters, and told in full here for the first time by one of Britain's leading commentators on national security, this story reveals how during the darkest moments of the Cold War one of the West's greatest achievements transpired as a result of MI5's break with the CIA. The disclosure of the inside story of this historic event also comes at a time when there is a renewed tension in the relationship between transatlantic spy services - from the intelligence they share or hold back, to the way they respond to their political masters and stand up to threats from Russia."--Provided by publisher.

BK

eng

Kerbaj, Richard

<format>BK</format>
The Untold Story of the KGB Agent Who Exposed the CIA and Saved MI5

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781443477819/MC.GIF&client=416-978-7639&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Tapas España

Bring the vibrant world of Spanish cuisine into your kitchen with Tapas España. From Ragged Ass Road to Rideau Hall is a sweeping memoir from veteran journalist and northern chronicler Whit Fraser, tracing a lifetime spent at the front lines of the events that shaped modern Canada. From his youth in Nova Scotia to decades reporting across the Arctic, Fraser offers a riveting, behind-the-scenes account of major national turning points-stories he reported on up close, but never fully had the chance to tell until now. Fraser brings readers into the cold, stunned morning when the Soviet satellite Cosmos 954 rained nuclear debris across the Northwest Territories, igniting one of the most secretive international military operations in Canadian history. He revisits the tragedy of the Ocean Ranger, one of the world's most advanced oil rigs that became the site of an unthinkable disaster. On Parliament Hill, he reports from inside the storm of the National Energy Program and the tense constitutional negotiations that affirmed Indigenous rights while dividing the nation anew. Woven throughout is Fraser's personal journey-his years living in the North, his friendships with leaders who transformed the political landscape, and his partnership with Mary Simon, whose swearing-in as Canada's first Indigenous Governor General brings his story full circle. Anchored by vivid reporting and personal reflection, From Ragged Ass Road to Rideau Hall is a powerful journey through the people, politics, and places that have defined Canada-and the shifting landscape of journalism itself."--Provided by publisher.

BK

eng

Fraser, Whit

<format>BK</format>
Stories of Canada

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781771624695/MC.GIF&client=416-978-7639&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

The Bodhisattva Ideal

"One of the most revolutionary aspects of Mahayana Buddhism is what many contemporary writers on Buddhism call the "bodhisattva ideal." This refers to a spiritual outlook and a way of life that is rooted in a resolute vow and dedicated to the welfare of all sentient beings. This volume features authoritative Tibetan presentations of the ideal based on key Indian Buddhist treatises, especially Nāgārjuna's Precious Garland, Śāntideva's Guide to the Bodhisattva Way and Compendium of Training, Maitreya's Ornament of Mahayana Sutras, and Asaṅga's Bodhisattva Ground. Together, the nine Tibetan texts translated here embrace the complete spectrum of the bodhisattva ideal as understood, taught, and practiced in Tibetan Buddhism. From first generating the faith of admiration toward the compassionate teacher, the Buddha, by recollecting his altruistic deeds in former births ( jātakas) to generating the awakening mind (bodhicitta) followed by the solemn act of taking the bodhisattva vow, from cultivating oneself through everyday mindfulness rooted in an altruistic outlook to the specifics of living life according to the bodhisattva's moral precepts, and from the initial stages of training in the six perfections to the full flowering of the union of awakening mind with the wisdom seeing things as they are, this volume offers a comprehensive roadmap to making the bodhisattva ideal an animating reality in the practitioner's own life"-- Provided by publisher.

BK

eng

<format>BK</format>
Selected Key Texts

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9780861714506/MC.GIF&client=416-978-7639&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Gilgamesh

"Originating nearly four thousand years ago in ancient Mesopotamia, the epic of Gilgamesh tells the story of a tyrannical king and his wild counterpart, Enkidu, spawned by the gods to rein in the king's cruel tendencies. They face off in a violent wrestling match, but the clash forges a bond between them. The deep, fiercely intimate camaraderie that emerges carries the two men through extraordinary adventures, from a bloody battle with the fearsome forest guardian, Humbaba, to a cataclysmic struggle with the Bull of Heaven. As the friends venture further into the unknown, they find themselves confronted with the ultimate, defining fate of all humankind. At once a story about love among men and a timeless meditation on loss, grief, and the longing to outlast death, Gilgamesh is at its core one of the oldest and most majestic depictions of human resilience and dignity. Now, in the hands of Simon Armitage, poet laureate of the United Kingdom, this primeval epic swells and flows in rhythmic, contemporary English with a vitality and immediacy that only a genuinely poetic rendering can achieve. Grounded in the latest scholarship but always propulsively readable, Armitage’s version brings the ancient text to new life, offering a new generation of readers a thrilling portal into the very dawn of storytelling"-- Front cover flap.

BK

eng

<format>BK</format>
A New Verse Translation

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781631496684/MC.GIF&client=416-978-7639&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Memoir of A Collection

BK

eng

Kasher, Steven

<format>BK</format>
Finding Meaning Through Art

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9780789215307/MC.GIF&client=416-978-7639&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Art for Everyone

A practical, step-by-step guide to collecting and curating your own art collection that will transform your space on any budget. Fully illustrated, this explains the detail of the Royal Navy's sector on D-Day and after. Although D-Day is perhaps the most written-about event in military history, little has been published on the nuts-and-bolts of the sea power that Overlord relied upon. In this book, eminent naval historian Michael Whitby examines the fleet that secured the British Assault Area from the eve of D-Day until the end of the assault phase of operations on 30 June. While led and dominated by the Royal Navy, it was multinational, including forces from Canada, Norway, and the Free French. The invasion had many moving parts and proved there is more to a successful assault than simply putting soldiers ashore on a beach. This book explains the minesweeping that allowed the landings to take place, and the various naval operations that brought British and Canadian troops to the beaches. It also explores how the fleet defended the British Assault Area from counterattacks by enemy destroyers, coastal forces, mining, and special attack units, and how it sustained the build-up that fed resources to the growing Allied forces. Illustrated with archive photos, original artwork and 3D diagrams and maps, and drawing upon primary documentation that has previously gone largely unused, this book offers a fresh exploration of the sea power behind D-Day"--Amazon website.

BK

eng

Hewitt, Nick (Naval historian)

<format>BK</format>
The Royal Navy's Eastern Task Force

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781472861306/MC.GIF&client=416-978-7639&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Antifascist Dad

"A guide for parents on fighting the rise of far-right extremism with their children; conversations on resisting despair, building resilience, and divesting from toxic masculinity"-- Provided by publisher.

BK

eng

Remski, Matthew D.

<format>BK</format>
Urgent Conversations With Young People in Chaotic Times

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9798889843290/MC.GIF&client=416-978-7639&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Health, Illness, and Medicine in Canada

"The fundamentals of the health of Canadians continue to be threatened by ongoing inequality within Canada, climate change, the failures of all levels of governments to prevent hunger, the housing crisis, insufficient supports for newcomers as they seek asylum or settle within Canada, and other issues related to the social determinants of health. Significant changes in the medical care system continue. Millions of Canadians don't have primary care doctors or nurse practitioners to turn to with a worrying symptom. ERs are closing randomly. Health-care workers are burnt out, leaving, and planning to leave the field. The public health care system is plagued by shortages of money, personnel, and adequate planning and political will. Privatization is challenging the equity of the universal medical care system. As contested federal transfer payments decrease and the responsibility for medical care shifts to the provinces, the likelihood grows of inequality in the availability of particular services across the nation. Universal medical care is also threatened as Canada shifts to the political right in the context of economic globalization. Unless the direction in which we are heading alters dramatically, inequality in medical services among provinces, between the rich and the poor, among racialized and ethnic groups, and between women and men will continue to grow. Though he is remembered for the chromatic style of his most famous works, Klee’s late work reflects a dark and dramatic transformation, providing insight into the artist’s psychological landscape. Forced to flee Nazi persecution in 1933, Klee faced final years that were marked by exile, illness, and political upheaval. Paul Klee: Other Possible Worlds takes the unsettling last decade of Klee’s life as its subject, arguing that he accepted his vulnerability as a strength—one that enabled him to develop a personal rebuff of fascism through a lexicon of abstraction. With 120 illustrations highlighting works from throughout Klee’s career, this catalog traces the evolution of his artistic practice and frames his late work in the context of his oeuvre. Essays by leading scholars and curators reexamine Klee’s legacy and the importance of his late masterpieces as an artistic defiance against oppression. This books complements the exhibition Paul Klee: Other Possible Worlds on view at the Jewish Museum March 20 to July 26, 2026"--Publisher website.

BK

eng

Klee, Paul

<format>BK</format>
Other Possible Worlds

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9780300285444/MC.GIF&client=416-978-7639&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

The Fight of Our Lives

"A thoughtful, poignant look at the AIDS crisis in the United States that includes primary source interviews, history, medical research, and cultural touchpoints. The AIDS crisis in America is complex and composed of countless individual stories of grief, love, and advocacy. Its history shows the power of youth activism, how creativity and community can be vehicles for social change, and how bigotry and misinformation led to inequality in care. The early days of the AIDS crisis saw LGBTQ and other marginalized communities making strides in the fight for equality. As many people in positions of power were slow to act or actively didn't pay attention until their own communities were affected, the fight for equality turned into a fight for their lives. Grassroots efforts filled in gaps where mainstream medicine and politics failed, and over time, a cultural shift of awareness emerged, which led to more research and more treatments. And while the disease has transitioned from a death sentence to one that people can live full lives with, there are still people dying of HIV/AIDS today because they can't access the care they need. The fight may have begun decades ago, but is not yet over. Award-winning author David Levithan and University of Cambridge PhD Gabriel Duckels detail a brief history of the epidemic, touching on key moments and figures, such as Ryan White, ACT UP, Larry Kramer and Anthony Fauci, Pedro Zamora from MTV's The Real World, and the Names Quilt. Threaded throughout are poems, essays, and other creative works, in addition to first-person interviews and narratives. The most important takeaway is that we must remember. We need to know what happened and why. Our voices are powerful, and they can make a difference"--Provided by publisher.

BK

eng

Levithan, David

<format>BK</format>
Voices From the AIDS Crisis

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9780593710920/MC.GIF&client=416-978-7639&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Nuclear Weapons

A groundbreaking history of nuclear weapons across the world, from their invention to the end of the Cold War How should we deal with nuclear weapons? The discovery of nuclear fission fundamentally changed the world order. Its power was harnessed, nuclear bombs invented, and the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed. In recurring international crises and calls for arms control, the threat of nuclear war has hung over humanity ever since. David Holloway traces how these weapons shaped the last century, from the US-Soviet arms race to the rivalry between India and Pakistan. Deterrence and intimidation, alliances and war plans, international treaties and organizations have all played their role. At the centre were political leaders--among them Truman, Kennedy, and Reagan, as well as Stalin, Khrushchev, and Gorbachev--who all had their fingers on the nuclear button. This is a global history of these fearsome weapons and our attempts to deal with the consequences of their existence--a story at once fascinating and repellent, of a very dangerous period in our history.

BK

eng

Holloway, David

<format>BK</format>
An International History

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9780300229448/MC.GIF&client=416-978-7639&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Night Brilliance

"According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 50-70 million adults in the United States experience chronic sleep deprivation. The average American sleeps for only 5.7 hours a night, 2 hours less than the recommended minimum. With Dr. Maisel’s help, readers can learn how to snooze sooner and spend their hours in bed productively! An expert on the effect of stress on sleep, Dr. Eric Maisel has innovated a way to manage anxiety and stress using the power of your own mind. A fresh and unexpected approach to problem-solving, Maisel participated in leading a study on various aspects of sleep. A positive and surprising discovery from this study, people can “assign” themselves a problem to solve during sleep and awaken with potential solutions. Night Brilliance is not only a guide to this practice for readers, but also a space to record your feelings and findings. It also provides ways to sleep more, more deeply, and relax sooner."--

BK

eng

Maisel, Eric

<format>BK</format>
The Sleep Thinker's Guide to Powerful Problem-solving

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9781963667318/MC.GIF&client=416-978-7639&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Other People's Children

Presents essays in which the author, an African-American teacher, chronicles her efforts to understand the perspectives her multi-racial students bring to the classroom, discussing the reasons why many white and middle-class African-American teachers encounter problems teaching students from different cultures.

BK

eng

Delpit, Lisa

<format>BK</format>
Cultural Conflict in the Classroom

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9798893850376/MC.GIF&client=416-978-7639&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>

Muskism

"Quinn Slobodian and Ben Tarnoff cut through the hype and the hate to reveal what Elon Musk really represents: a new political economy, where to be "free" means to serve a Technoking. After law school, Bottoms worked as an attorney, served as a judge, and was elected to City Council and the mayorship, where she garnered national attention for her leadership during the pandemic and George Floyd protests. Later, she was appointed senior advisor in President Joe Biden’s administration. Yet Bottoms felt disquieted internally. She was in her early fifties and approaching the age her beloved father was when he died. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something in her life was missing, like she’d forgotten to bring an essential element of herself along for her ascension. Stepping away from the daily political grind, Bottoms realized how much she’d sanded down parts of herself on her path to professional success. She’d tucked away the fuller details about her dad’s drug abuse and prison stint for dealing; the sexual abuse she endured; the eating disorder she developed; the close-knit, utterly unpolished family who doted on her and gave her an incredible foundation of love and confidence but whose influence she’d smoothed to a sleek, charming, campaign-ready sheen. She thought that was the price of upward mobility. Then she realized she was wrong."--Amazon.

BK

eng

Bottoms, Keisha Lance

<format>BK</format>
A Memoir

<image_url>https://secure.syndetics.com/index.aspx?isbn=9780063420083/MC.GIF&client=416-978-7639&type=xw12&oclc=</image_url>
